[OpendTect_Users] Installing multiple versions on the same machine

Hi all,

We get a lot of support e-mail that implies that the user in question is
under the impression that (s)he can only install one version of
OpendTect on one machine.

That is not the case.

What most people want is one version of the 'stable' and one of the
'development' release. These can co-exist without any problem. They
occupy different directories on disk, but use the same data store and
personal settings. On Linux and Mac you may have to copy or link (a)
license file(s).

If for some reason you want/need to have multiple versions of the same
type, you can do this by simply using another directory to install it
in, or selecting another target directory (Windows). After installation,
renaming the desktop icon to something with the precise version number
will usually be convenient.

Lastly, upgrading to a new patch release is also very simple. Very
little will be different, most often only some shared libraries
(Windows: DLL's) will have changed.

On Linux and Mac upgrading is nothing more than using 'inst_pkgs.od'.

On Windows I'd recommend uninstalling the previous version first. All
personal and licensing settings will simply remain (this is why we
always tell you to not put license files in the release directory).
