Dear colleagues,

It is a pleasure for me to announce the official release of OpendTect v5.0.

This is a major upgrade of the system with many new features and new
plugins. Highlights In OpendTect (the open source part) are:

   - Visualization is based on OpenSceneGraph (a different graphics library)
   - Rework of the 2D geometry
   - All batch processing can be restarted
   - Attributes on pre-stack gathers
   - Improved horizon-based painter
   - F-K plots on slices
   - Re-worked mathematics expressions
   - Directional texture attributes - Plugin from Joanneum Institute
   - Improved setup for distributed computing
   - Improved handling multi-component / pre-stack interaction
   - Completely reworked documentation with context-sensitive help, fully
searchable index and permanently visible TOC
   - Matlab connection

OpendTect v5.0 also features two new plugins by ARK CLS:

   - GeoDataSync - Accelerate is a Petrel plugin that supports direct
access of data stored in OpendTect and Import / Export of data objects both
   ways.
   - Multi-Volume Seismic Enhancement - a linear regression tool to combine
up to four color inverted products into a desired elastic property.

Also the commercial plugins have been extended and upgraded. A highlight
here is the new, highly interactive workflow to create 2D HorizonCubes.

To see all updates to OpendTect and the dGB plugins in this release as well
as our plans for post v5.0, please see the OpendTect Roadmap at:
http://www.opendtect.org/index.php/products/opendtect-roadmap .

To install OpendTect v5.0 please use the OpendTect installer under the
Utilities menu, or visit the download center at:
http://www.opendtect.org/index.php/products/download .

*Warning:*
Please be aware that due to major changes in the underlying graphics
library, and the structures of 2D seismic data and 3D objects there are a
few restrictions to be aware of:

   1. Sessions built in v4.6 will not work in v5.0.
   2. OpendTect will prompt you to convert 2D seismic and 3D objects to the
   new formats.
   3. After the conversion you can still use v4.6 to access the converted
   data objects.
   4. New 2D seismic lines and 3D objects created in v5.0 cannot be
   accessed in v4.6.

We hope the new version meets your expectation and we look forward to any
comments, or feedback you may have.

Best regards,

Kristofer Tingdahl
