We have solved this problem a few days ago already. I sent a mail to this 
list, but apparently mail from my office address does not get here.

With respect to development on windows: we have switched to gcc 3.4 in 
order to finally get rid of the 2GB file size limit. This has as 
consequence that development will also have to be done with gcc 3.4, which 
is an experimental package under cygwin.

It can be a bit confusing if you try to install this. What worked for me 
is to fire up the cygwin installer and then once you get to the package 
selection part, select "Keep" on the radio buttons on top.
Then go to the devel packages and select gcc, gcc-core and gcc-g++ as 
version 3.4, which is currently 3.4.1-1.

Unfortunately, the gnu debugger does not work with this version of gcc. 
I'm currently looking into that.
